Question about using a controller

When I try to use a dualshock 4 the game is completely unplayable, most button presses are not registered so I'll fail almost immediately. I tried using a Steam Controller which had better luck (I'm able to at least finish most songs that aren't too spammy) Is there any way to get controllers to work better? I was considering picking up a Project Diva f controller or making an arcade controller at some point
